A Saturday spent sewing

Today I had big hopes of getting the house all cleaned up again. Then my better sense (or my lazy sense) took over and I decided to take a nap and then sew some. I finished quilting the lime green quilt and then got my mom's bones quilt loaded on the machine. I need to get her quilt done before they get here on Tuesday afternoon - so she can take it home with her - and so I can sweet talk her into doing the hand sewing on the binding of the baby quilt!

I wanted to work on something new and exciting. OK, maybe older and exciting again! So I dug out a UFO that is made from the scraps of a top I made for the owner of the quilt store Nines works at. Here is the original quilt.

And here is what I did with the leftovers! Nines - don't tell Tonya that there were that many leftovers! This wall hanging is about 60 by 30. I used almost every last scrap. Can you see on the two side outer borders where I had to add a piece of an alternate color to get enough to make the border long enough? I have got maybe a square foot of fabric left over. This was a quick little project. I already had the two main blocks done. I just added the sashing between the two blocks and then put on the outer border. Now - how to quilt it? I need my mom and Nina to lay down before they read this next sentence. Yes, i am considering hand quilting it. With those big stitches I saw over on another Maverick's blog. What do you think? Can I do this?

  1. Of course you can hand quilt it! And of course I'll be glad to bind the baby quilt for you. And of course you'll go ahead and quilt that Civil War quilt and let me bind it and borrow it for a while.... love you! mom

  2. MMMMMM.... does giving away boxes of fabric count as using up your stash????

  3. what a wonderful UFO quilt to have pulled out It is just stunning. It'll be enhanced by large quilting stitches for sure. What colour will you choose?

  4. I love the UFO and what a creative way to get enough fabric fro the outer border. I'm sure it will look wonderful hand quilted.

  5. It most definately was not a lazy sense that kicked in...it was an artistic sense! And a very smart artistic sense, I might add!!! Good for you!!!

I love your leftovers...very very cool! And hand quilting is going to give it a funky touch...go for it, Sarah! (My sister sells hand dyed floss from Weeks Dye Works...that would be a cool touch, wouldn't it!)

  6. Sarah, I remember that curved quilt pattern - they had one on display at our LQS. I love what you did with the leftovers! Looks like a box dancing, the one on the bottom right looks like he is kicking his leg out. Or maybe Japanese characters. It looks like a lot of fun.

  7. Sarah, these are fantastic! They are so artsy looking. It would look great handquilted in a Variegated metallic thread. I don't like binding either! My least favorite part of the quiltmaking process.

  8. I see it "big stitched" in variegated pearl cottons. And I think if you did a loosely curvy/loopy-t-loo style you could probably have it all done in a day! Love it love it love it!
